Smile design is the planning stage of cosmetic dentistry. We start with photographs of your face and teeth and look at how the teeth, gums, lips and facial proportions relate to one another, because a smile that looks right on your face depends on more than the colour of the teeth. Digital drawings laid over your photographs show proposed changes in tooth shape and position, so you can see and discuss the result before treatment starts.
The plan then draws on the full range of cosmetic treatments: whitening, bonding to reshape or repair, veneers, tooth contouring and gum contouring, together with straightening or replacing teeth where that is part of the picture. For larger changes, a trial mock-up of the new shape can also be tried in the mouth before anything permanent is done, so you can judge how it looks, feels and sounds.
Smile design: step by step
We start by listening: what you like, what bothers you, and what you would like to be different when you smile.
Photographs of your face and teeth are taken, and we assess how your teeth, gums, smile and face fit together.
Digital changes are drawn onto your photographs to show proposed tooth shapes and positions, so you can react to the result and ask for adjustments.
We agree which treatments to use, in what order and over what timescale. Any decay or gum disease is dealt with first.
Good to know about Smile design
It varies by treatment. Whitening lasts from about six months to three years, bonding five to eight years, and veneers five to fifteen years. Tooth and gum contouring are permanent.
A preview is a guide and not a guarantee, because a drawing can differ from how teeth look in the mouth. Some treatments cannot be reversed, and cosmetic work is not usually covered by insurance, so we go through cost and maintenance before you decide.
